I don't usually do this. After all, it's all over the news.
But today, just for one moment, imagine what it's like to be here:
More than 230 people died on a day of carnage in Iraq.
One witness said: 'There were pieces of flesh all over the place. Women were screaming and shouting for their loved ones who died.'
Shopkeeper Ahmed Hameed said: 'The street was transformed into a swimming pool of blood.'

Pro I know, this is a cowardly attack on civilians.
I have my views on the staying in/ pulling out of Iraq argument; but I'm not really posting this to make any political point or statement right now. Just the sadness and suffering of it all has smacked me between the eyes today.

yes I can understand that. Problem is in this world there is too much sympathy and empathy and not enough action. Perhaps if the troops over there were allowed to sort out the problem rather than being paid spectators something would get done.
Yes RTB , I can imagine. It is a horrible, horrible thing. Burning flesh is a smell that will never leave you. My heart goes out to those who will have this in their nightmares for quite some time.

What I'm saying is the media is blowing all of this out of proportion, the media made us go to Iraq, if we really where fighting terrorism we'd tackle ETA who kill 10 times more than anything in Iraq but seeing as it doesn't interest us they don't print it

Pro Fair enough, I understand your point about selective coverage. But yes, media will focus on what is considered 'topical'.
There are doubtless many worse atrocities that go on in the world that deserve as much if not more coverage in our media, and it's good to be aware of how we may be misled or manipulated according to information that we receive, or don't receive. But don't think that the media can't be manipulated by the selective release of information, too; going to Iraq was a government-led agenda.
This post wasn't intended to be political; purely a personal response to something that really touched me today. Taking a moment out from the 'bigger picture' and thinking about the individuals affected by the stories you hear, whether it's someone affected by the bombs in Iraq, the massacre of the Tutsis, or the gunning down of students on a campus. It's sometimes just worth reflecting on.

Pro I always feel VERY lucky when seeing unimaginable horrors on tv from the safety of my very nice house, on a very nice estate, in a very nice market town where nothing much really happens by way of even petty crime *hmmm wonders whether or not she is being a bit naive with the latter* I know that the things that go on in my life are SO trivial in comparison.
We should all be thanking our lucky stars each & every day that we will never experience such atrocities. x

I'm glad you mentioned this, it bothered me too.
It's like we're supposed to have become immune to it, used to seeing wailing women and troops and children with missing limbs and blood running down the streets and Jon Snow looking solemn about it all for a few minutes.
Last night's news gave so much more coverage to one screwed up kid that killed 32 Americans than the deaths of 130 Iraqis.

Pro You can't help but become immune to it in some ways - we'd probably all give up in despair if we took it to heart each and every time we saw something like this on the news.
I just think sometimes it's worth stopping to give it proper consideration on a more personal level.

Yeah. I think that's what I meant. Or maybe it's more that I think it's terrible that we are able to be immune to such things. Guess that's just how it is these days. I'm just as guilty.

it makes our lives and worries seem so small and insignificant, unfortunately if we worry about everything we won't be able to see what we have got, if it tells us anything it is that life is changable and we should enjoy each day that we are free and alive ......hmmm and i am spending my day off on the computer.... something is wrong here

One of my clients is from Afghanistan. She told me of the time when she was with her father over there, saw a rocket missile come and blow him into bits and pieces everywhere...she has never been the same since...

Unfortunately this horror is being caused by Iraqis on Iraqis, one faction of a religion on another. What can be done about it?
If the UK and US troops pull out will these attacks stop? Don't think so.
They are not aimed at the Security Forces but at soft civilian targets that will cause the utmost suffering and terror.
Typical of the cowardly tossers that carry out these kind of attacks.
